Same/different concept learning by primates and birds

چکیده
Same/different abstract-concept learning experiments were conducted with two primate species and three avian by progressively increasing the size of training stimulus set distinctly different pictures from eight to 1,024 pictures. These same/different trained presented simultaneously. Transfer tests same employed interspersed trials novel assess level correct performance on very first time subjects had seen those All eventually performed these high accuracy, contradicting long-accepted notion that nonhuman animals are unable learn concept same/different. Capuchin rhesus monkeys learned more readily than did pigeons. Clark’s nutcrackers black-billed magpies as monkeys, even showed a slight advantage smallest sets. Those followed delay procedures, such was introduced after responded sample picture before test picture. In sequential task, accuracy shown diminish when previous trial matched previously trial. This effect is known proactive interference. The pigeons’ interference greater at 10-s delays 1-s delays, revealing time-based By contrast, little or no monkeys’ interference, suggesting have better explicit memory where they saw potential interfering picture, event-based memory.

Mechanisms of same/different concept learning in primates and avians.
Mechanisms of same/different concept learning by rhesus monkeys, capuchin monkeys, and pigeons were studied in terms of how these species learned the task (e.g., item-specific learning versus relational learning) and how rapidly they learned the abstract concept, as the training set size was doubled. They had similar displays, training stimuli, test stimuli, and contingencies. The monkey specie...

Several comparative research programs have focused on the cognitive, life history and ecological traits that account for variation in brain size. We review one of these programs, a program that uses the reported frequency of behavioral innovation as an operational measure of cognition. In both birds and primates, innovation rate is positively correlated with the relative size of association are...

We present a new machine learning method that, given a set of training examples, induces a definition of the target concept in terms of a hierarchy of intermediate concepts and their definitions. This effectively decomposes the problem into smaller, less complex problems. The method is inspired by the Boolean function decomposition approach to the design of switching circuits. To cope with high...
